All students, faculty, and staff with a Northeastern Office 365 license can access the online Office applications through OneDrive for Business on the Office 365 portal. Faculty and staff can also access the applications through Outlook on the web.

Creating Files Online

Sign in to the Office 365 portal with your Office 365 username ([myNortheastern username]@northeastern.edu) and your password. The application tiles are on the main page.

From within Outlook on the web, on the menu bar at the top right is a square icon of squares. Select that to open the app launcher.

From here you can click the tile for the application and proceed as you would in the Office applications on your computer. Or you can go into OneDrive and create files from there using the directions below.

On the OneDrive home screen, the menu includes a “new” option. When you select that, a pop-up will appear that will allow you to choose to create a file or folder.

Using the Office Online Applications

For a general tutorial on how the Office 365 online applications work, go to lynda.northeastern.edu, sign in with your myNortheastern username and password, and then search for the “Office Online Essential Training” course.

Microsoft is continually updating the online applications, providing new features and improving functionality. If you plan to use Office Online often, ITS recommends bookmarking that filter of the Microsoft Office Blogs and following updates there.

NOTE:

  • The Lynda.com courses are tutorials for the general OneDrive versions of the Office 365 online applications. Northeastern uses OneDrive for Business, which has several additional features. Please visit the OneDrive for Business page to learn more about those features.
  • ITS does not recommend syncing files on Northeastern-managed computers using the OneDrive for Business sync app (OneDrive for PC in Section 1 of the tutorial). That feature is still under evaluation for use at Northeastern.

Opening Online Files on Your Computer

Currently, if you wish to edit online files on your computer instead of the web, you must download the file to your computer.

Any file created within the Office online applications or uploaded to OneDrive can be opened for editing with Office 2010 or 2013 (Windows), or Office 2011 or Office 2016 (Mac) by downloading the file from OneDrive and opening it with the application on your computer.

Once done editing, save it again to your computer and, if you wish, reupload to it OneDrive.
