AppV 5.1 distributes over 75% of the applications on Northeastern-managed Windows computers. Earlier this year, Northeastern ITS upgraded our Application Virtualization service to the latest version, AppV 5.1, which will now be the only version of AppV used for the Northeastern community.

The latest recommended Windows computers available for purchase come with AppV 5.1 as part of the Windows 10 operating system. So anyone with a new computer or one re-imaged with a Northeastern image will have AppV 5.1 automatically.

What if I don’t have a Northeastern-managed computer?

Most applications distributed via AppV are also available in other ways. If you go to the ITS website and go to Available Software, you can find the chart for Labs, Classrooms and Individual Access where available titles are listed along with their methods of distribution.

Why do I Need Appv?

Applications distributed via AppV are uniformly and routinely updated with security and other patches; you would need to upgrade those same applications yourself if you accessed them in other ways.

Some of the applications available on AppV are very large, taking up considerable hard-drive space on your computer. MATLAB, for example, can take 2 to as much as 6 GB of hard disc space. ArcGIS takes 2.4 GB, and AutoCAD takes 4 GB.

If you use AppV, only those elements of the application you use are available for the duration of use. This means that you need to be connected to NUnet or NUwave or via the VPN when you first run these applications or if you want to use an additional software function for the first time.

New applications distributed via AppV are available for you to use immediately.

How do I get AppV 5.1?

The easiest way to get AppV 5.1 is to re-image your computer with Windows 10. AppV is part of that operating system upgrade.

If you currently have AppV 4.6 on your Windows 7 computer, AppV 5.1 is available as an upgrade in Software Center on a Northeastern-managed Windows computer.

  1. Go to Microsoft System Center on your Northeastern-managed computer.
  2. Under Available Software, select Microsoft AppV 5.1 Client Migration
  3. Upgrade and click the INSTALL button.
