Cyber threats—like phishing emails and accidental data leaks—are evolving, but so are the defenses protecting Northeastern.
Stronger phishing protections, improved detection of impersonation attempts, and enhanced email security settings have blocked 6.3 million malicious emails in January and February. These upgrades now quarantine more harmful messages before they reach inboxes, significantly reducing the risk of phishing scams. Of these blocked emails, 4.7 million contained actively harmful links, attachments, or phishing attempts.
With new security measures in place, Northeastern now stops these threats before they reach inboxes, making it easier than ever to stay protected.
What’s changing?
Smarter email alerts in Outlook
Outlook now shows a warning banner for emails from unfamiliar senders, helping users spot potential phishing attempts before clicking on links. A built-in link provides guidance on avoiding scams:

Preventing accidental data leaks
IT Services is testing new Data Loss Prevention (DLP) tools that detect and block the sharing of sensitive information, such as Social Security Numbers or financial data. If flagged, an instant alert would prompt the sender to review the content and take appropriate actions before sending.
Check the Phish Bowl for phishing scams
Northeastern’s Phish Bowl is regularly updated with the latest phishing attempts, providing real examples to help the community recognize and avoid scams before they fall for them.
To verify whether an email is phishing, forward the suspected message to phishcatcher@northeastern.edu to investigate.
Stronger protection for university accounts
Northeastern has strengthened security settings behind the scenes to block unauthorized access attempts and protect accounts from cyber threats.
How these updates help
- Fewer security threats – 6.3 million malicious emails have already been blocked in the beginning of 2025.
- Less guesswork – Spotting suspicious emails is easier than ever.
- Fewer risks – Automatic alerts stop data leaks before they happen.
- Stronger protection – Enhanced security measures safeguard university accounts.
These updates are part of an ongoing effort to keep university data protected without disrupting daily work and learning.
