Claude, a secure, enterprise-level generative AI platform developed by the AI company Anthropic, is now available to all active students, faculty, and staff at Northeastern University. Access to Claude for Education, a specialized version of Claude tailored for higher education institutions, will accelerate the university’s plans to integrate AI into learning, teaching, research, and administrative operations across the global university system.

What is Claude?

Claude is a powerful generative AI tool designed for creative engagement, advanced reasoning, visual analysis, multilingual translation, and code generation. You can interact with Claude through prompts, ranging from simple questions to complex requests. What makes Claude especially unique is its ability to expound on its reasoning, allowing you to learn as you interact with it.

Claude can help with accomplishing a variety of tasks, from summarizing complex information to generating personalized study plans or professional development materials. Claude responds to “prompts”, which can range from questions like, “help me create a project timeline” to more advanced requests.

What can I do with Claude?

The university’s enterprise accounts come with some of Claude’s most powerful features, including:

  • Claude Sonnet 3.7: Claude’s most intelligent model to date integrates hybrid reasoning to provide both quick responses and complex problem-solving.
  • Projects: These are workspaces with their own chat history and knowledge bases that allow you to upload documents, provide context, and have focused chats with Claude on a particular topic. Using Projects, you can access Learning mode, a feature that encourages independent thinking by guiding students to solutions, rather than just answering their prompts.
  • Artifacts: Artifacts are content types such as documents, code, websites, and images that you can draft and iterate on alongside your chat.
  • Web search: Once enabled in your account settings, this feature allows you to use Claude to search the internet to provide more up-to-date and relevant responses.
  • Extended thinking mode: This feature supports complex problems and tasks, such as in-depth analysis or solving for mathematical calculations or proofs.

Northeastern Claude accounts include downloads for desktop (Windows and macOS) and mobile (Apple and Google app stores).
