Microsoft has officially announced that support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025, marking a critical transition period for all university devices and systems. This end-of-life designation means that after this date, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, bug fixes, or technical support for Windows 10 operating systems.
Northeastern-managed Windows devices can upgrade to Windows 11 via Windows Update. If your university device’s current operating system is Windows 10, this update is critical. To ensure optimal performance and security, upgrading to Windows 11 is strongly encouraged at your earliest convenience.
Why this matters for Northeastern
For an institution handling sensitive student records, research data, and financial information, maintaining secure systems isn’t just recommended: it’s essential.
Computers running Windows 10 will no longer receive ongoing security patches, leaving them increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, malware, and data breaches. Windows 11 also adds new security features not available in Windows 10.
Additionally, many software applications and security tools will gradually phase out Windows 10 compatibility, potentially leaving devices unable to run critical university applications or access necessary resources.
How to prepare and move to Windows 11
Northeastern ITS is reaching out to members of the community who are currently operating on Windows 10. If you’re not sure whether your device is using Windows 10 or 11, this knowledge article explains how to check for the Windows 11 update.
All faculty, staff, and students using university-managed Windows devices must transition to Windows 11 before the October 2025 deadline.
This upgrade is:
- Convenient – install at a time that works for your schedule through September (after then, mandatory upgrades may force a reboot).
- Low disruption – downloads in the background.
- Secure – files stay intact.
- Quick – installs in 15–20 minutes after restarting your device.
