Summer is here! As we pack our bags for beach getaways, mountain retreats, or simply enjoying the sunny days from our backyards, it’s important not to let our guard down. While we’re relaxing and having fun, cybercriminals are hard at work, exploiting every opportunity to breach security defenses.
Here are some cybersecurity tips to ensure your summer is not only enjoyable but secure:
Before your trip
- If traveling on university business, be sure to review the Global Safety and Support Office’s website for important information and resources, including specific requirements for countries designated as high-risk or heightened-cyber-risk.
- When possible, leave university-issued devices at home. If it’s necessary to bring a university-issued device, remove sensitive data and/or ensure the device is encrypted (where allowed).
- Consider using a temporary device, such as a prepaid cell phone when traveling internationally.
- Apply operating system and software application updates and download any necessary applications such as VPN.
- Avoid purchasing electronic cables and hardware when traveling internationally.
- Use strong passwords to prevent unauthorized access in the event of loss or theft.
- Avoid sharing travel plans on social media.
During your trip
- Keep devices in a visible and physically secure location.
- Avoid using public Wi-Fi and hotspots and disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use.
- Avoid using public computers to log into online accounts or access sensitive data. Avoid plugging in untrusted accessories.
After your trip
- Keep your university-loaner device powered off and return it to the IT Service Desk.
- Change any passwords used while traveling internationally.
- Run antivirus scans on devices used while traveling.
- Monitor university and personal accounts for unusual activity.
