Need to Throw Out an Old Laptop, Smartphone or Multifunction Printer?

If it’s time to say goodbye to that old device—and if it has the ability to hold data—don’t just throw it out; even devices that have been purged of data often still hold data that can be recovered! That’s right. Even after a hard reset on that old Echo device or other Internet-of-Things hardware, data is likely still recoverable, as described in a recent ITS Communities post, IoT Devices May Retain Echoes of Your Data.

There is, however, a solution; Data Destruction Day! Yes, Data Destruction Day is coming back to the Boston campus on Monday, October 18 from 11:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m.

Just bring that old laptop, smartphone, multifunction printer, Echo Dot, and even paper, to the A1 DataShred trucks for free, secure, and sustainable destruction.

What can you bring? Any of the following:

  • Computer laptops
  • Loose hard drives
  • External hard drives
  • Cell phones
  • Tablets
  • Data-bearing gaming devices (Xbox, Wii)
  • Smart speakers and controllers (Alexa, Echo, etc.)
  • DVDs/CDs/thumb drives
  • Multi-function printers
  • Scanners
  • Paper
